Egg Freezing in the UK
Here at Gaia, we believe everyone should feel in control of their fertility journey. Whoever you are, whatever your circumstances, wherever things might end up. With access to fertility care earlier on in life, you can better prepare for what’s ahead. That’s why we’re committed to making fertility treatment more affordable with our personalised insurance and financing plans, soon to be launching for egg freezing.
What is egg freezing?
Egg freezing is the primary and most common method of fertility preservation. Fertility declines with age, and the quality of your eggs plays a leading role in this fact. By freezing eggs at a younger age, the egg quality is preserved, allowing you to increase your chances of having a child later on on life.
How does it work?
There are three key steps involved in the egg freezing process. First, medication is injected daily to stimulate the ovaries. The goal is to produce as many eggs as possible. During this time you may need to visit your clinic for 2-3 ultrasound scans to check how you’re responding. Then, your egg collection takes place to retrieve the eggs. It’s a surgical procedure normally performed under sedation and takes around 15 minutes. Finally, the eggs are frozen using a process called vitrification, a rapid cooling technique using liquid nitrogen, and they’re kept in storage until you wish to use them for IVF.
When should you consider egg freezing?
The average age for elective egg freezing is currently in the mid-thirties. The legal storage limit recently increased from 10 to 55 years, therefore it is expected that more people in their 20s will consider egg freezing. Freezing at a younger age preserves not only the quality, but increases the chance of having higher numbers of eggs retrieved. It can also be recommended for those at any age who are about to undergo medical treatment that may affect fertility, such as chemotherapy.
What are the success rates of future pregnancy with egg freezing?
When frozen eggs are used later in life, they are thawed and fertilised with sperm, in a bid to create embryos suitable for transfer. There is an attrition rate at each stage of the process, so having 10 eggs in the freezer doesn’t necessarily equate to 10 attempts at pregnancy, as numbers will be lost along the way. The main factors that determine the likelihood of having a child are age (age when you froze eggs), egg quality and the number of eggs collected.
What are the costs of egg freezing?
A round of egg freezing in the UK costs £6,000 on average, including the chargeable additional items such as medication and storage fees. Ongoing storage fees are typically £300-£400 per year.
With Gaia, you’ll get access to the same treatment, but our payment plans will allow you to spread the cost, join our community and benefit from specialised support throughout.
